Boredom is a Blessing

A daily workout routine can get boring from time to take, but boredom can also be a blessing.

I am the kind of person who needs to get my workout in early in the morning or I will get wrapped up in my work and never get around to finding that precious exercise time.  I make it a point to workout daily during the week for an hour a day, and then find active activities to do with my husband on the weekends to make a complete routine for a healthy lifestyle.

I am the most motivated in the morning to check things off my to-do list, but working out carries extra motivation for me.  I know that completing my workout will give me more energy, help me sleep better, and give me time to think about the day ahead.

That last benefit is where the boredom of similar workouts can come in handy.  During the winter chill I enjoy working out to a variety of workout videos that I purchase on sites like Amazon.  Even though I have quite the collection, I find myself using my favorite videos quite often.

At first I felt pangs of boredom doing the same movements over and over.  At the same time I began to enjoy the repetition because I was able to focus more on my technique, and when I perfected that my mind was able to wander.  Now I can anticipate the next move on the video so I often turn down the volume and let my mind crawl through my thoughts.

Working out this way has become like a meditation for me, and I look forward to the time to let my mind wander each morning.  I still feel those pangs of boredom from time to time, but more often I find creativity and new ideas.

  1. I love to get to the point when I am working out that I know the movements so well, I can get to a meditative state. It is a vital part of my life.

  2. I also feel like I get a better workout when I know the moves - I am able to work more on form and make sure I am getting the most out of each muscle.

  3. I definitely feel the pain of workout boredom from time to time as well. Over the past few months I've started mixing things up a lot more than I used to and do Zumba on the wii and try to run every now and then instead of just sticking to the elliptical.

P.S. I found your blog on Fun Friday Blog Hop. Check out mine if you get a chance!

  4. Lisa - How easy is Zumba to follow on the Wii? I'm not real coordinated so I stay away from those kind of things ;) I get into an elliptical rut as well, but I am not as close to the gym as I was in my old house so now I am on a video kick! I will hop over and check out your blog right now.
