Pinwheels

Creativity is one of those elusive talents that seems to come and go whenever it pleases.

During my day to day routine of product photography in my career it is easy to come up with ideas to showcase my clients products. I have a steady stream of new objects coming into the studio so even though the work often proves to be similar, there is always a twist. I love to use my experience to figure out the perfect combination of images they need to make their products sell.

It is between client jobs when I am shooting my stock photography images that things can get tricky. To have to be creative on command isn't as easy as it sounds and often leads to burn out. I produce in volume, and all those ideas don't always come as quickly as I would like them to.

I have a traditional sketch book where I brainstorm and draw out plans for my shoot, but sometimes what does the trick is more simple.

During my wedding planning earlier in the year I acquired a pinwheel that I used as a prop in my studio as well as a base pattern for making a larger pinwheel that was used instead of a bouquet in the ceremony. I loved the simple images I took of it on white, and when I moved the studio down to SC I decided to stick the pinwheel in the ground outside of my window.

Fresh air, and a view of a colorful spinning pinwheel can do wonders to clear the mind, and promote creativity. The simplicity of the moment gives me an appreciation for my craft, and opens my mind to new ideas.
