Gobble Gobble

With all the autumn colors around me I can't help but have turkey on the brain!

Turkey is a healthy protein choice that just happens to be one of my favorites.  The domesticated turkey that we eat today is a descendant of the Wild Turkey from North America.  Turkey is low in saturated fat, high in protein and also provides riboflavin, phosphorus and selenium to your diet.

But the best part about turkey is that is makes a great substitution for recipes that call for ground beef.  Ground turkey comes in different percentages of lean meat so I always choose the leanest one which can cost a little bit more, but is worth it to me.  Next time ground beef is on your mind why not make the switch?

I had turkey on the brain while I was grocery shopping and have 3 meals in mind with what I bought.

Tonight I am making some simple traditional tacos using ground turkey instead of ground beef.  I find that after all the seasonings are added the taste is very similar.  You can use a packet of taco seasoning, or if you want to make your own just mix together 1 tbsp Chili Powder with 1/4 tsp of garlic powder, onion powder, crushed red papper, and paprika.  Finally to add that signature taste put in 1 tbsp of cumin with a dash of salt.

Tomorrow I am making a pasta sauce with some cooked turkey sausage, and I am throwing the sausage that I don't use in the sauce in the freezer to be grilled like hot dogs someday in the future.

Just doing a search for ground turkey on any recipe site yields numerous results if you are looking for something new to try in your kitchen.  I think after writing this post that some spicy turkey chili might be in my future!  Turkey - it's not just for sandwiches and thanksgiving!

I used to use ground turkey in everything. It makes delicious tacos, burgers, and good in pizza sauce. Meatloaf isn't too bad either. It is much better than ground beef!

    Great tips!
